Unlike river or lake water, seawater contains a high amount of dissolved salts and minerals. Scientists have studied this phenomenon for many years and discovered several reasons behind it.

Reason Behind Solty Water of Ocean
The main reason ocean water is salty is the process of weathering. Rainwater, which is slightly acidic because it contains dissolved carbon dioxide and chloride from the air, falls on rocks and soil. Over time, it slowly breaks down the rocks and dissolves tiny amounts of minerals and salts which contains carbon dioxide and chloride.These dissolved minerals are carried directly by rivers and streams into the oceans. Sodium and chloride are the most common minerals found in seawater, and together they form common salt.
Volcanic Activity
Another important source of
salt is
volcanic activity beneath the oceans. Underwater volcanoes and hydrothermal vents release minerals and gases from deep inside the Earth into the seawater. These materials add more salts and chemicals to the oceans; which organisms are not built by one day but build up over millions of years.
Cycle of Water
The cycle of water also plays a major role in salty water of ocean The sun heats ocean water, causing it to evaporate and form clouds. However, the salt does not evaporate with the water. Only pure water vapor rises into the atmosphere, in that process leaving the salts behind in the ocean. As this process continues over millions of years, the concentration of salt in the oceans increases.
On average, ocean water contains about 3.5% salt.Which helps to maintain ocean currents, affects climate patterns, and supports many forms of marine life. Different oceans and seas may have different levels of salinity or brininess depending on climate, rainfall, and evaporation rates.
In conclusion, ocean water is salty because minerals from rocks are constantly carried into the sea by rivers, streams while evaporation leaves the salt behind. Volcanic activity under the sea also contributes to the salt content. Together, these natural processes have made the oceans salty over billions of years.
