Who is Srimanta Sankardev

Srimanta Sankardev was one of the greatest saints, social and religious reformers, musicians, poets, playwrights, and cultural icons of 15th–16th century Assam. He was born in October 1449 at Bordowa (Alipukhuri) in present-day Nagaon district, Assam, to Kusumbar Siromani Bhuyan and Satyasandhya.
He had two wives during his life time Suryavati and Kalindi.

Legacy of Srimanta Sankardev

He played a major role in shaping the religious, social, and cultural identity of Assamese society. His teachings continue to influence the people of Assam and followers of the Ekasarana Naam Dharma.Which is called Neo-Vaishnavite movement.
Srimanta Sankardev promoted Vaishnavism and emphasized devotion to Lord Krishna through prayer, music, and community worship. He believed in equality, compassion, and social harmony. His religious movement helped bring people from different communities together and challenged several social inequalities of his time.

Contribution to Assamese Culture

Sankardev made an extraordinary contribution to Assamese literature and culture. He wrote devotional songs known as Borgeet, composed religious texts, and created Ankiya Naat, Bhaona a unique form of Assamese one-act drama. His famous work, Kirtan Ghoxa, remains an important devotional text. He developed Sattriya dance which later became one of India’s recognized classical dance traditions. He also created literary language Brajavali.
The institutions known as Satras and Namghars ( The community prayer halls) became important centers of religion, education, art, music, drama and community life under his movement. These institutions continue to play a significant role in Assamese culture.
Srimanta Sankardev's legacy extends far beyond religion. His contributions to literature, music, drama, dance, and social reform have made him an unforgettable figure in Indian history. Every year, people across Assam remember his teachings and celebrate his lasting contribution to society.
